Imitation Barrel Organs.
L&R Hartley Manufacturing makes two visually similar but very different imitation barrel organs, both based on original designs by master-craftsman and organ-builder Lionel D C Hartley.
They are the Mutebox Organ for stage use and the Faque Organ for movie-making or carnivals.
The Mutebox Organ
Visually, this colourful organ looks (from a distance) like a barrel organ but is a completely empty cabinet with a moveable handle. It is designed for use on stage in theatrical drama, opera or ballet. The sound is provided separately from a CD played through the theatre's public address system or from a portable player in the wings of the stage. As the cabinet is empty, this is a light-weight stage prop, which makes it ideal for children (who may find the real instrument too heavy). By having the sound controlled separately, the Stage Manager has more control over the timing and volume of the sound. This organ, including an audio CD of Barrel Organ Music, a shoulder-strap and supporting pole, is supplied ready painted in a kit-set form and can be dismantled and stored flat when not in use.

The Faque Organ
This very realistic looking and sounding organ has an external cabinet identical to a real organ and internal components seen through openings on the front, including a moving barrel and paper-roll. It has a cassette or CD player secretly concealed with-in, with special electronics to amplify and modify the sound to simulate the sounds of a real instrument. The stopping and starting of the music is controlled by the operator, which adds to the effect. This imitation organ is ideal for close-up work such as busking, movie making, street carnivals & parades, etc. The weight also approximates that of the original instrument and this adds to the realism.

The cost of converting the jingle to barrel-organ sound onto a studio-quality CD approximated the cost of the electronics and so we quoted the same cost for an instrument without the electronics but with the custom-made CD provided instead.) |
