Published work: Mein Enemy Within

[Illustrated by Lionel Hartley]

Publication Date: 2006

Publication Notes: Mein Enemy Within relates to a man with German heritage. His first life story unfolds from 1930 in Scotland to early in the new year of 1945 in Switzerland. The court-martial Rolf von Bresch caused as a cadet, related to the pilfering of items, which he instigated in order to ensnare a colleague. That event almost caused his downfall. Instead it eventuated in another cadet’s death. This conniving move gave Rolf the opportunity to pursue his life’s ambitions in the Reich. His story relates not only to his own life, but also to the lives of those he inflicted terror upon and exerted control over prior to his Reich years and way beyond. The lives he literally tore apart were never the same again. The people he killed or had put to death never deserved their destiny. Jews he particularly targeted to suit his own ends. This cruel conniving officer relished the feats he carried out, either directly or indirectly throughout those tumultuous War years. The fear he instilled in the unwary flowed from Hamburg across to Berlin in Germany. He was a product of the times. His sadistic father ruined his childhood by wielding the cruel stick of authority. Like an incest victim he too wielded cruelty to all and sundry he came across, not only at the Chancellery, but also in his private life. Rolf lived by the code of murder. He flourished on other people’s misfortunes. He bent their minds until those who trusted him became subservient to his will. One indiscrete word, one false step meant all who offended or cheated him faced the firing squad. There was no another option once they crossed this Reich kapitan’s path. Death or escape became their only release from his evil hands. To escape from his custody was rare and most unlikely.
However several did escape and in later years told their story at his time of retribution.
