Subsidies and Sponsorship

Authors: Would you like to receive financial assistance with the promotion of your book?

Others: Would you like to gain the benefit of helping a budding writer gain a foothold in his or her career as a writer? And at the same time promote your business or industry?

L&R Hartley, specialist beta publishers - creating preliminary editions of books and multimedia for new writers - are seeking to match interested parties to commit to book sponsorship or subsidy with aspiring new authors.

Subsidies and Sponsorship

What is the Difference?

Book sponsorship:

1. For a writer's first book to encourage that writer along his or her writing career

2. For a specified amount per book

3. For books only - single orders using the Simplified Mail Order System

4. A copy of the sponsor's advertising brochure may be included with the book order. Note: We do NOT provide sponsors with the names or addresses of customers!

5. Limited to 10,000 copies per author (we believe that after that the author should have sufficient foot-hold not to need the sponsorship).

Book subsidy:

1. Also for a writer's first book to encourage that writer along his or her writing career

2. Also for a specified amount per book

3. Subsidy can be for books, for postage, for freight handling (packaging, etc), or for promotional materials.

4. A link to the subsidy provider's web address is included on the author's website and the subsidy provider is identified as such. Note: We do NOT provide subsidy providers with the names or addresses of customers!

5. Limited to $20,000 per author (we believe that by then the author should have a sufficient foot-hold not to need the subsidy).

If you think that you would be interested in being a sponsor or committing to a providing a writer's subsidy, please contact us.

Stipulations:

Subsidy or sponsorship providers may specify the amount per book.

Full payment for subsidy or sponsorship must be made in advance, in Australian Dollars.

Once a contract is made, the provider cannot reclaim any monies paid, as they will then belong in the subsidy programme and can only be used for the stated purpose.

Subsidy or sponsorship providers may also specify a time frame (e.g. the first two years of sales) although this is not recommended. If a time frame is set, then any monetary residue after the time frame is returned to the provider.

The publisher has the right to retain accumulated interest to assist with administrative expenses.

Subsidy or sponsorship providers may suggest a certain author, but the choice of author is reserved for the publisher. The provider will be advised of the names of the title and author of the book but the publisher will NOT divulge the names or addresses of customers. The publisher cannot be legally liable over the choice of author but will endeavour not to inappropriately match provider and publication (for example a book on marriage enrichment and sponsorship by a divorce lawyer).

Providers are advised to check the tax laws in their own country before assuming that subsidies or sponsorship are tax-deductible.

Sponsors are required to provide their own advertising brochures of a size suitable for packaging with a paperback or CD-ROM. If the provider chooses, this may be changed from time to time at the provider's expense.

Subsidy providers are responsible to ensure that the link provided to their web address is accurate and we suggest that it be checked occasionally for functionality.

If a book is withdrawn from the market or re-published by another publisher the subsidy will cease to apply and the residue of any pre-paid unused monies will be returned to the provider. They will not be automatically assigned to another author or book or used for any other purpose. If the provider wishes to continue subsidy or sponsorship, a new contract will need to be made.
